Battery health is measured as state of health (SoH): the percentage of the original capacity that remains. A brand-new battery is 100% SoH. After five years of typical use, most batteries sit between 80% and 92% — perfectly acceptable for most drivers. Below 75%, range loss becomes noticeable and the car is harder to sell on.
How to check SoH before you buy
The method varies by make:
- Nissan Leaf: the Leaf Battery App (free, paired via OBD2 dongle) gives a precise SoH reading. Older Leafs (pre-2018 24kWh) used a 12-bar display — 10 bars or above is the target.
- Tesla Model 3 / Model Y: open the Energy app while charging at a Supercharger. Estimated battery capacity shows in kWh — compare against the car's rated capacity.
- Volkswagen ID.3 / ID.4: battery health is shown in the car's settings menu under Range and charging.
- Renault Zoe: Renault dealers can run a battery report via their diagnostic system. Ask for one before buying.
- MG MG4 and newer EVs: most 2022-onwards models display SoH directly in the infotainment.
For any car where you can't read SoH directly, plug in an OBD2 Bluetooth dongle and use an app such as Car Scanner ELM OBD2 (iOS/Android). It won't work on every model but covers a wide range.
Target SoH of 80% or above
At 80% SoH, a Nissan Leaf rated at 168 miles WLTP has an effective range of roughly 135 miles. That's still enough for most daily driving — but factor in real-world range (typically 70–80% of WLTP in mixed conditions) before you commit.
Charging: what you need at home and on the road
Charging compatibility is the second thing to get right. Buy a car with the wrong connector for your local public network and you'll spend a lot of time adapting around it.
Home charging
The vast majority of used EVs in the UK come with a Type 2 AC inlet. A home wallbox — typically a 7kW unit — will fully charge most EVs overnight. Installation costs around £800–£1,000 including labour, and the government's EV chargepoint grant covers up to £500 for eligible homeowners and renters.
If you only have a three-pin socket, charging is much slower — typically 2–5 miles of range per hour. This works for light daily driving but isn't practical for regular longer journeys.
Public rapid charging

Road tax changed in April 2025: electric cars now pay Vehicle Excise Duty for the first time, at the standard rate of 195 pounds per year. 25,000 pounds and above: premium and performance

What to check on a used EV test drive
The test drive tells you things no report can. Here is what to focus on beyond the standard checks.
Regenerative braking: all EVs offer some form of regen. Toggle between modes and confirm it works smoothly. A jerky or non-functioning regen setting could indicate a software or drivetrain issue.
One-pedal driving: most modern EVs allow strong regen on lift-off, letting you drive without touching the brake pedal in urban conditions. Test it. Some drivers love it, some find it disconcerting - you will want to know before you buy.

- Renault Zoe: battery was leased separately on older models - confirm it is now owned outright, as some pre-2020 Zoes still carry a monthly battery rental charge.
- MG MG4: 7 years/150,000km battery warranty.
A car still within its battery warranty is worth paying a small premium for. It shifts the risk of unexpected degradation back to the manufacturer.
Where to buy a used electric car
You have three main routes, each with different risk profiles.
Franchised dealers: buying a used EV from a franchised dealer of the same brand gives you access to approved used programmes, manufacturer-backed warranties, and in some cases a battery health report as standard. You will pay a premium, but the peace of mind has real value on a technology-heavy purchase.
Independent used car dealers: a wider selection and more negotiating room. Standards vary enormously. Ask specifically about their EV knowledge and whether they have run a battery health check. If they have not, ask them to arrange one before you commit.
Private sellers: the cheapest option but the highest risk. You have fewer protections under consumer law and no recourse if the car develops a fault.
