EV Charger Grant UK: Who Qualifies and How to Apply
Up to 350 pounds off a home EV charger installation - here is who is eligible and how to claim.
The UK government offers a grant of up to 350 pounds towards the cost of installing a home EV charger through the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS). It is not available to everyone — eligibility rules changed significantly in 2022 — but if you qualify it is straightforward to claim and the saving is real.
This guide explains the current EV charger grant UK rules clearly: who qualifies, which chargers are eligible, how the application works, and what other schemes exist for those who do not qualify for the EVHS. For the full installation process, see our guide to getting a home EV charger installed. For cost context, the installation cost guide covers typical totals with and without the grant.
Who qualifies for the EV charger grant?
The EVHS grant is currently available to:
- Renters in flats or houses (private or social rented sector)
- Flat owners (whether renting or owning the flat itself)
- People in rental accommodation who have their landlord's permission to install a charger
Who is no longer eligible:
Homeowners purchasing a new or used electric car are no longer eligible for the EVHS grant as of April 2022. This change removed the majority of the scheme's original beneficiaries. If you own your home outright (freehold or leasehold house), you do not qualify under the current rules.
The vehicle requirement:
To claim the grant, you must own or have ordered a qualifying electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. The vehicle must be on the OZEV approved vehicle list. Most current EVs qualify, but check the OZEV website if you own an older or less common model.
The property requirement:
The property must have off-street parking where the charger can be installed. The charger must be installed at the address where you live — you cannot claim for a second property or holiday home.
Landlord permission for renters
If you rent your property, you need written permission from your landlord before proceeding. Many landlords are open to this as a home improvement that adds value. If your landlord refuses unreasonably, you may have grounds to challenge under the Right to Install legislation - speak to Citizens Advice for guidance specific to your situation.
How much is the grant worth?
The EVHS grant covers 75% of the total installed cost, up to a maximum of 350 pounds. This means:
- An 800-pound installation qualifies for a 350-pound grant (75% = 600 pounds, capped at 350)
- A 1,200-pound installation also qualifies for the 350-pound maximum
- There is no scenario where the grant exceeds 350 pounds per installation
The grant is applied as a discount to your installer's bill. You pay the net amount. You never handle the grant money directly — your OZEV-approved installer claims it from the government on your behalf after the installation is complete.
You can claim one grant per property address. If you have two qualifying EVs at the same address, you cannot claim two grants.
Which chargers qualify for the grant?
Not every charger is eligible. The charger must be on the OZEV approved product list, which includes most major brands sold through approved installers in the UK. Qualifying chargers include units from Ohme, myenergi (Zappi), Pod Point, Easee, Wallbox, and others.
The complete and current approved product list is maintained at www.gov.uk/electric-vehicle-homecharge-scheme. Always verify before committing to a specific charger, as the list is updated periodically.
The charger must also be fitted by an OZEV-approved installer. This is a hard requirement — an unapproved electrician cannot submit a grant claim regardless of their competency.

What if I do not qualify for the EVHS grant?
If you own your home (house rather than flat) and bought your EV after April 2022, you do not qualify for the EVHS. Your options are:
Local authority schemes: Some councils offer their own subsidy or interest-free loan programmes for home EV charger installation. Check your local council website or search through the Energy Saving Trust's local grant finder.
Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS): If your employer does not yet have EV charging, the WCS offers grants to businesses to install workplace chargers. This does not directly help with home installation, but reduces your reliance on home charging if workplace charging is available.
LEVI scheme (on-street): If you have no off-street parking, the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure scheme funds on-street residential charging through local councils. See our EV charging without a driveway guide for more detail on this route.
For most homeowners who do not qualify, the installation cost without a grant (typically 800-1,200 pounds) still pays back within 12-24 months of regular home charging through fuel savings. The grant helps, but the economics of home charging work without it.
